Miles Allen, Times Dispatch staff writer published a news article on October 11, 1991 titled “Memories return as Wilder sees Pork Chop Hill.” This was published 38 years later after Governor Wilder’s military service in Korea where he spent nights in a trenched covered by beams and sandbags. The Governor still called Pork Hill the front while on a helicopter tour of the enemy terrorist in the past. He recounted how the Pork Chop looked as big as Virginia’s biggest mountain during his military days. The Governor said they thought the mountain was impenetrable but from the air you can notice it vulnerability. Governor Wilder spend half an hour flying over the north Korean stronghold where he won a Bronze Star as a soldier as he rescued wounded Americans and captured prisoners. The Governor tried to block most of the memories of the war where his friends, comrades, buddies were wounded or killed.
