DOUGLAS WILDER President Trachtenberg, Dean Friedenthal, members of the faculty, distinguished guests, family and friends, and graduates, I’m honored to be with you today, and to have been afforded this opportunity to address the National Law Center’s graduating class of 1990. When considering appropriate subject matter for today’s special occasion, I spent quite some time pondering an extensive mental list of possibilities. Time and again, the same question arose: what can I possibly talk about that would be of significant interest to law school graduates? I’ve heard it said that you can’t tell undergraduates anything, but you can tell law graduates everything— if you can afford $200 an hour.
