DOUGLAS WILDER Thank you. I'm pleased to have this opportunity to be with you this afternoon; and am honored to be receiving this association's "Citizen-of-the-Year" award. At the outset, let me say that my remarks in receiving this award will be brief. With today being April 15, no doubt one or two persons in this room have not yet quite gotten around to filling out this year's federal tax returns. In fact, time's running out ££ quickly, I'm not even going to make any jokes or biting comments about federal taxes . I do, however, want to take a moment to offer a few words of personal thanks to those of you in the cable industry - as well as those other parties throughout the broadcast community - who have agreed to simulcast the administration's anti-drug television special, "Keeping Your Kids Drug Free" on Tuesday, June 4 at 7:00 p.m. If we reach just one young person and one family with this program (and I have supreme confidence that we'll be reaching a great many more than that), this effort will have been a success. As each of us knows, it's not nearly enough to tell our children to "Just say 'no.'" Far too much is at stake for us to put our hope and faith in that failed cliche of the Eighties. Having declared the 1990 's to be Virginia’s "Decade of Youth and Families," my administration is determined to ensure that the empty slogans of the Eighties are permanently retired to the dustheaps of oblivion where they belong. Rather, our dreams for a better tomorrow must be grounded in a renewed commitment to meaningful communication between the generations. .. .as well as in a viable, coordinated plan of action to be implemented by our elected leaders and our law enforcement professionals . For more than twenty years, I have made no secret of my deeply held convictions that the pernicious evils of drugs and drug- related crime represent two of the greatest threats to our nation's security and moral undergirding.
